Holiday Homes With Private Pools in Gorski Kotar — What to Check Before You Book

in

Gorski Kotar

A private pool has become the thing that decides between one house and another in Gorski Kotar. There are more of them every year, and still fewer than the demand — so they are the first to book out.

Before you reserve one, there are a few things worth knowing, because a pool at 700 metres is not the same proposition as a pool on the coast.

Heated or unheated — the question that matters

At 700 to 800 metres above sea level, an unheated pool can be cold even in July, particularly in the morning and after a day of rain. Nights here are cool and the water does not hold its warmth the way it does near the sea.

If you are travelling with small children, ask directly whether the pool is heated, and to what temperature. It is the single question that most determines whether the pool gets used at all.

The season is shorter than you think

Outdoor pools in Gorski Kotar generally run from June to September, and some for less. Outside that they are covered or drained — so if you are booking in May or October, check that the pool is actually in service, not merely that it exists.

In winter its role is taken by the sauna and hot tub, which run all year here and are, in truth, more sought after.

Safety with children

  • Is the garden fenced, and can a child reach the pool unsupervised?
  • How deep is it, and is there a shallow end?
  • Is there a fence or cover around the pool itself?
  • Is the pool visible from the house and the terrace?

These rarely appear in listings and matter enormously to parents. A good host will answer them without hesitating.

Where to find them

  • Fužine and around — the most properties with pools, close to the lake
  • Delnice and nearby villages — larger houses with gardens
  • Lokve and Ravna Gora — isolated forest houses, often with a sauna as well
  • Vrbovsko and Brod na Kupi — slightly lower altitude and warmer summers

What to look for alongside the pool

A pool alone will not fill a week. The combination that works best in practice is a pool for summer, a sauna for the rest of the year, and a garden with a barbecue — so the house earns its keep in every season rather than two months.

  • A fenced garden
  • A barbecue and an outdoor table for the whole group
  • A sauna or hot tub
  • Shade — an awning, a tree or a covered terrace
  • Enough bathrooms for the number of guests

When to book

Houses with pools fill earlier than anything else in the region. For July and August it is realistic to enquire in March or April, and earlier still for August. The more isolated and better equipped the house, the sooner its calendar closes.

How much it actually gets used

Honestly: a pool is used less here than on the coast, and serves children more than adults. If you are travelling without children, money spent on a pool almost always does better spent on a sauna, a fireplace and seclusion.

With children it is the other way around — a pool solves the afternoons and is worth every euro.

In short

A house with a pool makes most sense for families with children, in July and August. In every other case a sauna, a fireplace and quiet will serve you better — so decide who is actually travelling before you book.
